SAYSORRY · LOVE & CONNECTION
Make the message personal
Choose a useful starting point, add the real incident or memory, and make a personal card or message.
Create your personal card ↗Job loss can affect plans and confidence, but a supportive message need not assume the person wants advice or introductions. Offer concrete help while protecting their news.
What matters in this situation
A practical offer should have boundaries so the friend can accept without feeling indebted. For example, offer one review session rather than unlimited job-search management. Ask before making introductions, and do not forward a CV containing personal information without explicit permission.
Plan the message before you send it
Friendships change with work, location, relationships and available energy. A thoughtful message opens a specific possibility without demanding that the old pattern return unchanged. Pay attention to mutual participation over time, rather than using one reply or invitation as a complete measure of loyalty.
1. Ask what information they want kept private
Begin with the situation between the two people, not a verdict about who is a good friend.
2. Offer one bounded task
Make the invitation, concern or repair specific enough that the other person can understand it.
3. Let them decide when to discuss applications
Allow the friendship to have a different pace or boundary without using public pressure to change the answer.
Three sample drafts to adapt
These are illustrative drafts, not accounts of real conversations. Use only wording that is true for you. Replace the person, detail and practical arrangement where needed, and leave out any line that would make the message less accurate.
Sample 1
I am sorry this happened. You do not need to turn it into a positive story for me.
Before borrowing this wording, check that every remembered detail and practical offer is accurate. Remove anything that belongs to another person’s situation.
Sample 2
If it would help, I can review one application with you this weekend. It is also fine if you want a break from job talk.
This is an alternative starting point, not a required second message. Choose it only when it matches what you genuinely want to communicate.
Sample 3
May I mention your search to a contact, or would you prefer I keep it private for now?
If you combine the drafts, keep the result focused. Repeating the same request in several forms can make a considerate message feel like pressure.
A line to avoid, and a clearer alternative
Everything happens for a reason, and I know exactly how you feel.
This version supplies an explanation and a shared feeling the writer cannot verify. The revised draft stays with what is known and offers room for the person’s own experience. Support does not require a prediction, a comparison with another experience or a request that the recipient show a reassuring response.
Choose the audience and format carefully
Use a direct message for a personal invitation, concern or apology rather than asking the whole group to interpret the friendship. Keep the first contact manageable. If you are proposing an activity, say what it involves and leave room for another preference. A person can decline a plan without being asked to defend the entire friendship.
Keep this particular risk in mind
Do not promise that a better job is guaranteed or share their situation without permission.
What to do after the message
Obtain consent before forwarding a CV or making an introduction.
Let the person choose whether to continue the conversation. A brief reply or no reply does not require you to improve the message and send it again. If you offered a task and they accept, confirm the practical details and complete it without creating a separate expectation to host, explain or express gratitude.
