SAYSORRY · APOLOGY & CONNECTION
Make the message personal
Choose a useful starting point, add the real incident or memory, and make a personal card or message.
Create your personal card ↗After an argument, start with your part of it. You can apologise for interrupting, raising your voice or using a hurtful remark without claiming responsibility for everything that happened. Keep the first message focused on that action.
Sorry Messages for Your Partner
Use these messages when you want to say sorry with honesty, love and respect. You can send them as a text, WhatsApp message or personal apology note.
- I am truly sorry for hurting you. You deserved patience and understanding from me, and I want to do better.
- Winning the argument was never more important than protecting your feelings. I am sorry I forgot that.
- I cannot undo my words, but I can take responsibility for them and make sure my actions change.
- I am sorry for not listening when you needed to be heard. I am ready to listen now without defending myself.
- You matter deeply to me, and I regret letting anger speak louder than my love and respect for you.
More Sorry Messages from Say Sorry
Note: A sincere apology can help start communication, but forgiveness depends on the people and situation involved. If a relationship includes fear, threats or abuse, prioritise safety and seek qualified help.
A practical next step
Ask whether a conversation is welcome before calling repeatedly. If both of you agree to talk, choose one issue and let each person finish. A request for space is not an invitation to send the same apology through another account.
Separate the argument from the way you handled it
You may still disagree about a shared expense, a family visit or how to spend the weekend. An apology for shouting does not decide that underlying issue. Make this distinction clearly so neither person feels that accepting the apology means surrendering a separate opinion.
I still want us to discuss the travel plan, but the way I spoke yesterday was not acceptable. I interrupted and raised my voice. I am sorry. If you want to continue, I would like to hear your concerns before we look at the dates again.
Make the next discussion smaller
Write down one question you need to answer together. “Which travel dates are possible?” is more manageable than “Why do you never understand me?” If other concerns arise, note them for another conversation rather than expanding the apology into a review of the whole relationship.
When a pause has been requested
A pause should give both people room to stop. Do not send a chain of messages asking whether the pause is over. If no return time was agreed, one calm invitation may be enough where contact remains welcome. If the person has requested no contact, respect that instead.
What Should You Say When Apologising to Your Partner?
A good apology should be clear and personal. Instead of saying only “sorry”, mention what you are sorry for and how you understand your partner’s pain.
You can say: “I am sorry for what I said during our fight. I understand that my words hurt you. I take responsibility for my mistake, and I want to make things better with patience and honesty.”
Avoid adding “but” immediately after your apology. For example, “I am sorry, but you also...” can make your apology sound like blame. A sincere apology starts with responsibility.
What Should You Avoid While Saying Sorry?
- Do not say, “I am sorry you feel that way.”
- Do not mix your apology with blame.
- Do not force your partner to forgive immediately.
- Do not send repeated messages if they ask for space.
- Do not make promises that you cannot keep.
- Do not treat one apology as the end of the problem if your behaviour has not changed.
